Prepping our Chevy Colorado and Coachmen Apex Nano travel trailer (aka: the rig) for a life of full time travel was a big job with lots of decisions.

And since the rig is our family’s home and it travels hundreds of miles every single weekend, these weren’t decisions that we made lightly. We needed to be confident that our setup was safe.

One of the most important investments we made into the safety of our rig was the Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch.

And after being on the road for 8 months, here’s why we know we made the right choice:

But before we get too far, let’s clear up the basics. You may be asking: “what exactly is a weight distribution hitch and why should I get one?” Good questions.

What’s a weight distribution hitch?

When towing, your travel trailer creates something called tongue weight, which is the downward pressure placed on the hitch of your truck.

You don’t want all that tongue weight resting solely on the back axles of your tow vehicle because it’ll cause issues with steering, braking, and handling.

What you actually want is for the weight of your travel trailer to be spread out as evenly as possible across the entire tow vehicle.

A weight distribution hitch helps you do it!

Why should I invest in a weight distribution hitch?

You should invest in one because it creates a safer, more stable tow vehicle. Plus, it’ll help reduce wear and tear over time.

We think it’s a good investment for anyone towing a travel trailer. And it’s even more important if you’re towing with a mid-size truck like we are.

If you’re traveling full time, we think it should be on your list of required equipment.

But all weight distribution hitches are not created equal. Here’s why we chose the one made by Equal-i-zer:

Why We Love the Equal-i-zer

1. Heavy-Duty Construction

The heavy-duty construction of the Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch is top notch.

Many other models use chains, which can get messy and aren’t as strong. Equal-i-zer’s is solid steel.

They’ve been in the business for 75+ years, so they’ve got a ton of experience to back up their current designs.

Plus, they stand behind the quality of their product with a lifetime warranty.

2. It’s Customizable

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch is tunable. That basically just means that you can adjust the amount of weight that the hitch distributes to the front of the truck. It’s customizable to work with your rig.

This is nice because it means that the weight distribution hitch will work well regardless of the size of the trailer you’re pulling.

Plus, it’s designed to allow flexible placement on a wide variety of pull-behind trailers. Here’s a good resource to learn more about the hitch that’s right for your rig.

3. Best-in-Class Anti-Sway Control

Kaitlan does not like passing semi trucks, even when we aren’t towing a trailer. It makes her nervous.

She’s read horror stories about smaller trucks and trailers being tossed around on the road when passing larger rigs or driving in poor weather.

We needed a solution that we could be confident in to keep us safe on the road. And, being in a mid-size truck meant we needed the best anti-away control we could get.

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch delivers. If you want to dive deeper into the technology they use to make it happen, check out the in-depth information on Equal-i-zer’s website.

4. It’s Easy to Use

We also love how simple it is to use. Once you set it up, you don’t have to adjust it again (unless, of course, you modify your rig).

Hitching and unhitching are easy, too. It only takes a few minutes to get set up. And there’s no restrictions on turn radius or backing up.

5. Made in the USA

When we can, we try to support local businesses. So when we found out that Equal-i-zer’s weight distribution hitch is made in America with American-made parts, we were sold.

Plus, they use high-quality American-made steel and every part of the production process is done in the USA.
